What’s The Difference Between 8GB And 16GB RAM?

GB Stands For Gigabytes

8GB and 16GB are the most common RAM sizes you’ll find in new laptops.

Both are great for general use but if you’re a power user or if you plan to use your laptop for gaming or other resource-intensive activities you may want to opt for a laptop with 16GB of RAM.

8GB Is The Minimum Amount Of RAM You Need

The simple answer is that 8GB is the minimum amount of RAM you need and 16GB is the amount you should get if you can afford it.

For most PC users 8GB RAM will be enough for general use but if you want to do things like video editing or gaming then you’ll need more.

What You Can Expect From 8GB And 16GB Of RAM

8GB Of RAM:

  • Will be enough for most users for general use such as web browsing social media and watching videos.
  • Will allow you to do some light photo and video editing.
  • Will let you play some games but might struggle with more demanding games.
  • Is the minimum amount of RAM for most laptops.
  • Is the minimum amount of RAM for gaming laptops.

16GB Of RAM:

  • Is ideal for power users who want to do things like video editing and gaming.
  • Will let you play even the most demanding games without any issues.
  • Will allow you to do heavy photo and video editing without any issues.
  • Is the ideal amount of RAM for gaming laptops.

16GB Is The Recommended Amount Of RAM

The amount of memory you need depends on what you use your PC for and how much multitasking you do.

If you only use one or two applications at once and don’t run any browser tabs in the background 4GB will do.

If you tend to have dozens of tabs open in Chrome or if you run several programs at once on a regular basis more RAM can help your system run more smoothly.

For most people we recommend at least 8GB of RAM and 16GB if you’re a power user.

That amount gives your PC enough memory to handle professional creative applications like Adobe Photoshop or Premiere Pro games and even some virtual reality software.

We don’t typically see many mainstream laptops with 32GB of RAM because the price increase isn’t worth it for most users.

That’s why 16GB is our sweet spot—it’s enough for almost everyone and won’t break the bank.

More RAM Can Help Your Computer Run Faster

Adding more random access memory or RAM to your computer can give it a performance boost particularly if you’re running demanding applications or games.

More RAM also gives your computer the ability to keep more applications and tabs open at the same time without slowing down.

The main difference between 8GB and 16GB of RAM is that the 16GB variant will let you do more things at once without any slowdown but it will also cost you more money.

So if you don’t think you’ll need the extra RAM going for the 8GB option will be a wiser choice both in terms of cost and power consumption.

It Can Also Help If You Have A Lot Of Programs Open At The Same Time

8GB of RAM is the sweet spot for the majority of users providing enough RAM for virtually all productivity tasks and less demanding games.

If you’re running demanding applications like video editing and CAD or you’re a hardcore gamer then we recommend that you start at 16GB and go up from there.

32GB might just be overkill for most users especially for budget systems.

Even if you are running the latest games or working with huge cad files filling up your RAM probably isn’t your bottleneck.

More likely you’ll want to focus on faster storage (like an SSD) and a more powerful graphics card.
