The Chinese Connection
Lenovo’s Chinese Ownership
It’s complicated.
Lenovo is a Chinese company but it doesn’t operate like most other Chinese companies.
In order to succeed in the global marketplace Lenovo had to learn how to operate like a Western company.
That meant a different way of doing business and that has caused some confusion about what Lenovo is and where it’s from.
Lenovo was founded in 1984 as a joint venture between the Chinese government and an investment group from Hong Kong.
The company started out as a reseller of computer parts but quickly began manufacturing its own products.
In 1990 Lenovo released its first desktop computer and soon become the leading PC manufacturer in China.
In 2005 Lenovo bought the personal computer division of IBM which gave the Chinese company a strong foothold in the global PC market.
The IBM acquisition also helped Lenovo brand itself as a global company—not just a Chinese one.
So while Lenovo is technically a Chinese company it doesn’t really operate like one.
And that makes sense when you consider that its goal is to be a global leader in the PC market— not just a leader in China
