I’ve been working from home for almost a decade now.
I’ve changed and used many laptops up until today and trust me, the laptops I tell you to buy do really work well for working from home.
Let’s take a look at what’s my best overall laptop for working from home, and what laptops do I suggest to you after that, in case you can’t afford the truly best one.
The Best Laptop For Working From Home
MacBook Pro 16″ (M1 Pro) – Editor’s Pick
Before I upgraded to this beast of a laptop for working from home, I had the MacBook Air M1 2020 with 8GB of RAM.
As you might also be thinking, I also thought the same.
That was that I’ll not need anything higher than 8GB of RAM, and the 2020 MacBook Air M1 is more than what I’ll ever need in terms of power and performance.
But trust me, I was SO wrong!
I bought the MBA M1 2020 with 8GB of RAM, and things went downhill from there.
I couldn’t even see anything properly on that tiny 13-inch MacBook Air screen, so I had to buy a 24-inch monitor to go with it.
But the problems didn’t stop there.
I then worked with that setup for a while, and then I started noticing that my 8GB of RAM is a pain in the a**, and I can’t even work properly on the laptop without hangs or heat-ups.
My RAM usage was always close to 100% and whenever I open Chrome, the laptop started begging for mercy!
I didn’t want to quit Chrome, so I decided that I’ll finally upgrade the RAM as well as the display size to 16 inches with the newer M1 Pro MacBook Pro 16 inches.
This time, I got it spec’d with 32GB of RAM, so I don’t have to ever think about running out of RAM again.
Believe me, I still feel that 32GB of RAM isn’t enough. Or at least is barely enough.
I still had to install a Chrome extension that will close or disable the tabs when I’ve not used them for a while. (The Great Suspender)
Even with that extension turned on, I’m at 36% RAM used right now, as you can see in the screenshot below.
Anyway, that’s enough about the problems.
Let’s get into why I actually chose the MacBook over Windows laptops as my work-from-home laptop computer.
As you read above, the M1-based MacBooks from Apple this time are a HUGE upgrade over the previous Intel Macs, since they’re much more power-efficient with these new processors now, so I had to get on the train.
I’ve never used a Mac before, this was my first time using a Mac, and the experience was terrible as I said.
I was told that 8GB of RAM is more than enough, and rivals 16GB of RAM from Windows-based laptops.
But all this was marketing crap for me when I actually bought and used an 8GB MacBook Air.
So I then finally upgraded to this newer 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro processor, and this is where I feel that I’ll be settled for a while now.
I don’t have too many issues with it.
The battery timing is awesome since it has an even bigger battery than my MacBook Air M1, which had a 49Wh battery and this one has 99Wh.
Pair this huge battery with the M1’s power efficiency, and you have a truly lovely combo of power and long battery life, which was unimaginable with Windows-based laptops before.
This was the dream I had when I switched from Windows to Mac with the 2020’s MacBook Air.
Now I’ve achieved it. A long-lasting, powerful laptop that will help me get through the most power-hungry tasks that I can think of performing, while it’ll also give me the best battery life whenever I’m out.
These are the exact reasons I think that the MacBook Pro 16-inch is the best overall laptop for working from home.

How To Pick A Laptop For Working From Home?
Working from home can be a great way to avoid the commute, save money on daycare, and get some extra work done.
But if you’re going to be productive, you need the right tools. A laptop is essential for working from home, but not all laptops are created equal.
Here are a few things to consider when choosing a laptop for working from home:
1. Size: Laptops come in all different sizes, so you need to choose one that’s comfortable to use. If you’re going to be using your laptop at home all day, you may want one that’s a little bigger than average. But if you’ll only be using it occasionally, a smaller model will do the trick.
2. Speed: You’ll want a laptop with plenty of processing power so you can multitask without lag time.
3. Decide what you need the laptop for. If you mainly need it for basic tasks like checking email and browsing the internet, then any basic model will do. But if you need to do more advanced tasks, like editing videos or graphics, then you’ll need a more powerful machine.
4. Consider your budget. Laptops can range in price from around $200 to $2000 or more, so decide how much you want to spend.
5. Think about portability. If you plan to take your laptop with you on the go, make sure it’s lightweight and has good battery life.
